UAE National Day Craft: Spray painting

It’s that time of the year again as flags in the colours of UAE are seen flying proudly across all buildings and homes, schools have week long celebrations where kids get to dress up and the country gets to witness a wonderful display of fireworks. Yes, it’s the 2nd December UAE National Day celebrations!

This year is special. It’s UAE’s Golden Jubilee marking 50 years since the formation of this country. Over the years my family has had the opportunity to call this place our home, and we are so grateful for everything this country has provided us. More so in the last couple of years, in the way everything has been handled during the pandemic. Thank you UAE for keeping us healthy and safe.

SPRAY PAINTING

While I have had the opportunity previously to craft before with my daughter, this is the first time my son and I will be sitting down together and craft something special for this day. If you don’t know already, my 2 year old is a big fan of Fireman Sam, and loves the spray bottle he has to spray over imaginary flames. With this is mind, I designed a craft where we combined the UAE flag colours and his love for spraying!

MATERIALS NEEDED:

You will need:

  1. Plain paper or card paper
  2. Black marker pen
  3. Aluminium foil
  4. Sketch pens or Chalk pens, in the colours : red, green, white and grey
  5. Spray bottle filled with water

METHOD:

  1. Draw a design of your choice using a black marker pen on a blank sheet of paper.
  2. On the aluminium foil, draw out scribbles using fresh/ sketch pens or chalk pens in the three colours, red, green, white and grey.
  3. Using a spray bottle, spray over the foil now. Here’s where I got my 2 year old involved and he loved it. Make sure it’s not dripping wet, yet allow the colours to mix together briefly.
  4. Turn the paper with your drawing, and place it on top of the coloured foil. Gently pat and then peel off the sheet of paper.
  5. Allow the paper to dry. Decorate as desired.

I hope you enjoyed this quick craft that’s suitable for all ages. While younger ones like my son can get involved with the spraying and scribbling, the older ones can also draw their own special design for the national day. Camels, the city skyline, the UAE flag… the possibilities are endless.

A grid of four photos to show the method for a UAE national day craft done with a two year old. The first picture is of a drawing done using a black marker, of a young girl holding the UAE flag. The second picture is of a foil and a collection of red, green and white chalk pens. The third image is of a toddler spraying water over the foil which has scribbles made by the chalk pen. The fourth image is of the plain paper with the drawing now having smudges of red and green, because the paper was placed on top of the wet foil, gently patted, and peeled.
