Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and one that brings together millions of Muslims from around the world. Not only is it the month where Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, and perform their obligatory prayers, but is also the month about patience, sympathy and love. It is a month that teaches kindness, forgiveness and most importantly remembrance of Allah. The arrival of this month is anticipated by not only the fasting Muslims , but also the ones exempt from fasting, because of the numerous blessings one can benefit from this month.

I have been fasting during the holy month of Ramadan since a very young age, and remember being an exciting month to look forward to. While it used to be all about the food (thanks mum!) for my younger fasting self back then, now it’s more about prayers, understanding the Quran, giving to charity and practising patience. My daughter, Azmu, is still very very young to be fasting, but it’s never too early to introduce Islamic virtues to her. The small, but extremely important kind of virtues, such as kindness.

‘The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: ‘Be kind, for whenever kindness becomes part of something, it beautifies it. Whenever it is taken from something, it leaves it tarnished.’

If you have been following me on Instagram, you know that ‘Kindness’ is on top of my list to teach my daughter. Among many other things of course, such as courage and self-love for example. Because the world we live in, could certainly do with a little more kindness from a lot more of us.

This year, I have prepared a ‘Little Acts of Kindness’ Ramadan Calendar, which I intend to follow through with my daughter. One small act of kindness for each day, which should be easy to carry out with my help. It includes easy acts of compassion towards your family members, other living beings and also fellow strangers. It is said that the reward of every good deed performed in the holy month of Ramadan is multiplied 70 times. So, why not step into the habit of carrying out kind deeds from the first day of Ramadan and hopefully it will be something that the little ones will want to carry on at their own pace.

I have attached the PDF copy of the ‘Little Acts of Kindness’ Ramadan Calendar for you to download below. Stick it on your refrigerator, or hang it in your kid’s bedroom and together tick off one good deed completed each day. Or better still, print two copies and share it with a friend. Let the children feel involved in this month of Ramadan through their little acts of kindness. Because, as I said before, the world could certainly do with a lot more kindness.

Something that I’ve also recently done which can be very useful if you have a Ramadan calendar, is to cut out each of the kindness squares separately and place them in the individual pockets of your ready -made Ramadan Calendar. This is the one that I use: Ramadan Calendar.
