It’s unfortunate that my kids don’t get to experience Autumn here in Dubai. I’m sure this is case for many other countries too, that don’t have the usual ‘text-book’ four seasons in a year. Watching the leaves turn shades of orange and red is truly magical. The same leaves that then go on to pile up into mountains for you to kick at and jump into. Autumn isn’t just about the change in the colour of leaves, but also everything else that comes with it: cozy jumpers, mugs of hot chocolate, pumpkin pies and the smell of cinnamon buns.

Here’s a quick play dough activity I made for the kids with all things autumn inspired. The wonderful thing about this activity is that it can be personalised to different images that come to your mind when you think of this season.

Autumn Inspired play dough activity

What you will need:

Cardboard

Hot glue gun

Scissor

Pencil

Play dough in the colours orange, yellow and red

Play dough toys such as the rolling pin

Method:

  1. To make the stamp pads, cut out circles and small strips. The strips need to be folded and glued to one side of the circle.
  2. Using a pencil, draw autumn inspired images. I chose to draw a woolly hat, leaves, a steaming hot cup, acorn and pumpkin.
  3. Once the hot glue gun is ready, go over the design that you’ve drawn out with the pencil. Allow to dry.
  4. Roll up the play dough into flat circles, and stamp away.
Steps on how to create this Autumn inspired play dough activity

Have fun and play:

Choose play dough that is of excellent quality, and non-toxic to children. I have chosen the brand ‘Maped’ for its bright colours. You can even choose to make your own home made play dough using simple ingredients form your kitchen pantry. What about adding some cinnamon powder to your home made dough to really get into the feel of the season.

This activity not only allows the children to have fun exploring what autumn is all about, but also presents an opportunity to build on their fine motor skills, social skills and creativity. In fact, for this activity I did not have any orange play dough, so to show the kids how to make the desired colour out of red and yellow play dough was a wonderful way to learn about primary colours.
