Azmu, on your 2nd birthday

Dearest Azmu,

You’ve turned two! Surely, a whole set of 365 days have gone by in the blink of an eye. You’ve grown from a toddler to a little girl now! A little girl with an enormous personality and a truck load of energy! How is it even possible that you hold so much love within your tiny heart to share with everyone you meet? Your little eyes now see and notice everything and everyone, inquisitive and curious. Your little voice that has a unique sound of its own, polite and melodious. MashAllah!

Mummy and papa are proud to have you as our sweet daughter, and love you more than words can express. Gone are the days where you were completely dependent on us. Ofcourse, you need me to put you to sleep, give you a bath and a few other necessary parenting-duties, but you are fully capable of eating by yourself, putting on your shoes (even though they are the wrong way round every time), choosing your story books and brushing your teeth. And that just shows how strong-minded you are.

This year, you’ve grown more beautiful, MashAllah. Not just because of your long curled eye lashes or your henna adorned hands. No, you’re beautiful because of the way your eyes light up when you smile and the way your laughter echoes when you are being chased around the house. This year, you’ve learned to walk and seeing you run up to papa when he comes home from work is the best feeling. This year, you’ve learned to dance and you sure know how to get your groove on as soon as the music starts to play. Infact you’ve got some favourite songs of your own, such as Ed Shereen’s ‘Shape of you’ , Dangal’s ‘Dhakad’ and Raees’s ‘Zalima’. This year, you’ve really bonded with your cousin brother and teamed up together to enjoy playing with cars, DIY tools and action figures such as Spiderman! Yep, you are so crazy for Spiderman, that you have a Spiderman’s night dress …. (ssshhh…and it’s your favourite).

You are determined! I had no idea you would talk this much! Last year, I remember teaching you words like ‘pa’ for water and ‘wawa’ for dress; even considering teaching you sign language, but you’ve completely surprised me! I’m lost for words when you tell me something like, ‘Mummy don’t touch my gym card, okay?’, only because in that moment I’m trying to comprehend how are you already forming a complete sentence with all these words perfectly strung together.

What are the other things that have taken me by surprise this year?

Yes, you recognise the YouTube icon on the IPad and can confidently scroll through the list of videos until you find the one you want to watch. You can sing the ABC song, count numbers upto 10… and with mistakes upto 20, recognise almost nine shapes, recognise most of the important colours, can name many fruits and vegetables, can point to different parts of the body and sing numerous nursery rhymes. Such a clever one you are, MashAllah!

You are not only beautiful and smart, but polite and kind too. This kindness can be seen when you play with your dolls and teddies while you trying to feed them, comb their hair or dress them up. You know when to use the words Please, Thank you and Sorry. You are a curious one as well, always asking questions and not afraid to explore around the shops on your own.

I can’t wait to see what the next year has in store for you, InshaAllah. My heart is saddened at the fact that you will no longer fit in my arms and may no longer need me as much, however I thrilled to find out about the places you will visit around the world, the new friends you will make and the wonderful interests you will develop. While you have been learning away about the world around you, soaking it all in like a sponge, you have taught a great deal to mummy and papa too. You have taught us to find happiness in the smaller things in life, you have shown us how to laugh like no one’s watching, you have strengthened our faith in religion, but most of all you have taught us what unconditional love really is.

Happy Birthday Dearest Azmu!
